the state of indiana shut down the sherman-minton bridge, the sherman-minton brej idge connects the town of new albany in southern indiana to louisville, kentucky. indiana is in charge of the bridge that spans the two states. the bridge was not shut down in this case because of some big storm like hurricane irene. the bridge was shut down in this case because it was deemed too dangerous to be kept open. inspection crews found a crack in a load bearing part of this 50-year-old bridge and decided they need to close down this bridge for at least three weeks for further diagnosis. every day 80,000 vehicles use that bridge to cross the ohio river. those commuters are being die verts verted to two other bridges, making a 20-minute commute a two-hour commute and adding to the aging process of the other two bridges to which traffic is being diverted. the mayor of jeffersonville, indiana, is urging motorists who need to go to downtown louisville from southern indiana to instead consider crossing the ohio river in madison, indiana, about 35 miles out of the way. the folks who use that bridge to ge

. a federal lawsuit is in the works against the state of indiana... in connection with last month's deadly state fair stage collapse.the lawsuit will seek to overturn indiana's five-million-dollar damage cap. seven people were killed and dozens of others injured when the stage collapsed during a storm at the indiana state fair. new video surfaces in which joran van der sloot admits to killing a 21-year old woman last year in a peru hotel room. the videotaped interrogation shows an interrogator asking van der sloot twice in spanish whether he killed stephany flores. both times he answers yes.van der sloot was arrested in june 2010 in relation to flores' death but was not formally charged until this month.van der sloot was also questioned in the 2005 disappearance of natallee holloway in aruba. that case is still unsolved. a decision on whether amanda knox could go free is expected next week.the american student and her boyfriend were convicted of killing knox's roommate back in 2007.they're now appealing their murder convictions. prosecutors call knox "two-faced" with a "diabolical" sid

in northern parts of indiana. there are severe storms here that have a history of producing 60-plus-mile-per-hour winds in addition to hail. so they're evacuating the stadium right now, get everybody out of there, game delay to help keep those people safe. so great move on the part of officials and authorities there. if you remember, it was just three weeks ago today in indianapolis where the stage collapsed during the sugar land concert and three people died there. i'm not sure if that's being taken into account at all in this situation. it's great to see that they're evacuating the situation right now as these storms are approaching from the west. you can see there's a severe thunderstorm watch across the whole area, it does include chicago too, and there's been ground stops at o'hare as well as midway because of those thunderstorms so if you're trying to travel, unfortunately things aren't looking better as things are pushing from from the west. maximum winds around 16 miles an hour, it's been kind of drifting erratically, off the coast of louisiana here. so the intensity has sta

at indiana university one remains missing. lauren disappeared. with each passing day her family's holding out hope she will be found. john yang reports. >> reporter: indiana university's new school year begins with an old question -- what happened to lauren speier? the 20-year-old fashion student was last seen walking back to her offcampus apartment at about 4:30 in the morning, after a night hoof partying with friend june 3rd, three months ago today. this summer, her parents retraced the steps at the same time of night. rob speier says what they saw disturbed them. >> we saw people walking, many of them were inebriated, some walking by themselves. our message had not registered with people. >> reporter: as the school year begins, lauren's apartment complex held safety seminars. >> we were extremely, extremely disappointed by the lack of turnout. they're either invincible or they are just completely oblivious to their surroundings. >> reporter: weeks of searching, including last month's search of thousands of tons of trash at a landfill, haven't turned up any trace of lauren. rob and charlene
